The Histopathology and
Cytopathology Laboratory is manned by a highly experienced and qualified team
of Senior Consultants:
It is supported by a dedicated and
sincere team of highly trained technical staff. The Laboratory is equipped with
state of art equipment’s, which includes Shandon Automatic Tissue Processor,
Medite Automatic Tissue Processor, Automated Histoembedder, Leica Rotary
Microtomes, Medite Cold plate, Sakura Autostainer, Tharmac Cytocentrifuge,
Leica Cryostat, high end binocular microscopes (Nikon, Olympus) with
Immunofluorescence and Polarising light attachments.
The Department prides itself at the
good quality H&E sections, Pap stain, Histochemistry and
Pmmunohistochemistry stains. It scores high in the United Kingdom National
External Quality Assurance Programme (UKNEQAS) which is the national quality
assurance agency for the entire United Kingdom.
The department receives diagnostic
biopsies, surgical specimens, exfoliative cytology specimens and fine needle
aspiration cytology specimens from all the specialties, including Oncology,
Urology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Gynaecology, Respiratory
Medicine, Paediatrics and Cardiothoracic surgery.
It also supports highly specialized branches such as
Neurosciences and Transplant (Renal, Liver and Bone Marrow) Services.
The department has a quick
turn-around-time of 3 to 5 days for Histopathology specimens, and 24 hours for
Cytology specimens. However, rapid, same day processing and reporting is done
for urgent cases such a transplant and other life threatening situations.
All Oncology resection specimens
require a proper gross examination including inking and selection of blocks for
accurate and complete reporting, including important prognostic parameters,
required for further management of cancer patients.
This highly specialized and tedious process is performed
by Senior Consultants in the department. Similarly, all Fine Needle Aspiration
Cytology (FNAC) procedures are skilfully and painlessly done by Senior
Consultants.
The utilization of ultrasound and CT guidance for
inaccessible organs ensures that almost all body sites can be targeted, thus
ensuring a reliable diagnosis on an OPD basis, which in turn equals to less
expenditure and minimal discomfort to the patient.
Facility of frozen section
examination is available for all specimens, including Neurosurgical cases.
The
reports are conveyed to the operating surgeon within a matter of minutes.
The
department provides high quality Immunohistochemistry services, with a vast
panel of over 100 antibodies. This aids in accurate diagnosis of various kinds
of malignancies and also provides the prognostic indicators.
It also
plays an important role in diagnosing certain infections, which helps in
management of immunosuppressed and transplant patients.
Immunofluorescence
studies are available for all kidney biopsies and in certain skin conditions,
where indicated.
As the
Hospital is a tertiary referral centre, many complex and diagnostically
challenging cases are referred to the department. These are properly worked up
with various special tests, including immunohistochemistry, and intra
departmental consultations when required. Surgical pathology reports are mostly
in consensus with those from frequent reviews in various international centres
of repute worldwide.
All this
results in Histopathology and Cytopathology reports of the highest
international standards, at a reasonably low cost. Samples from outside sources
are also accepted in the department. These may consist of surgical specimens,
or slides and blocks for review, or special tests such as frozen sections and
immunohistochemistry.
The
department is also involved in teaching:
Post
graduate course in DNB Pathology (National Board of Examination).
DMLT
course for Lab Technicians training in association with IGNOU.
The department is actively engaged in second opinions on samples and
biopsies carried out elsewhere, including abroad. The samples are received from
outside referrals also.
